We’ve all experienced the odd sleepless night but it’s the way we respond to the tossing and turning that affects whether we wind up with sustained insomnia. Maybe you experience falling asleep immediately and then wake in the night and can’t easily fall asleep again. Or maybe you can’t fall asleep for a long time and then sleep but only fitfully. Or something completely different.

Sleep is a vast subject with much research done into the many different aspects from sleepwalking through to dreams and their interpretation. Underlying poor sleep may well be something which has upset the HPA (hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal) axis. This special part of our brain is linked to our central nervous system so that our body responds to threats, even when these are not real by creating high levels of chemicals that prepare us for flight and unsettle our balance – the so-called fight – flight response. This may well be at the heart of why we cannot sleep well. Sometimes the way to resolve this can be a simple change in our lifestyle and at others it can be more complex.

Modern hypnosis techniques can be very effective in helping get to the bottom of this or certainly helping you to return to more suitable/supportive sleep patterns.

Insomnia is one of the most common sleep problems. It affects around 1 in 10 people at some point during their lives – about 90% of insomniacs are thought to suffer from insomnia only occasionally while a small number find it extremely difficult to get a good night’s sleep on a regular basis.

 

What causes insomnia?

 

There are several possible causes of insomnia including anxiety, depression and stress which prevent the insomniac from getting to sleep. For others, it could be an emotional event such as a bereavement or a change in marital status which affects the body’s natural sleep patterns.

What is more, insomniacs can become conditioned to have trouble sleeping, which means it is likely that insomniacs have a genetic predisposition to sleeplessness.

Insomnia is known as the most common health problem; As many as 16 million UK adults suffer from some form of insomnia.  31% say they have insomnia while 67% of UK adults suffer from disrupted sleep and 23% manage no more than five hours a night.

memories of the event enter your mind, you become instantly alert and highly stressed, ready for fight or flight. This is called hyper-arousal. It is exhausting and distressing to suffer from Post Traumatic Stress Disorder. Clear memories of the full event are not stored correctly in the brain because it has been overwhelmed, so many everyday sensations can trigger severe anxiety and partial flashbacks. It is very hard to talk about the event or feelings related to it, as one has to re-live the trauma and the body’s survival instinct automatically kicks in as if under real threat.
